Mike Carpenter, Managing Director

With over 20 years leadership experience and a graduate of the Harvard Business School, Mike is the founder of Murphy Capital and manages the capital investments and investment portfolio for Murphy.

Across Murphy Capital’s three strategic Infratech verticals, Greentech attracted the highest level of investment between 2020 and 2025, while Digital & AI emerged as the most heavily funded sector. The report also examines grant funding, patent activity, university spinouts and acquisitions, providing a broader perspective on where innovation is being created and how the ecosystem is evolving.

The findings reveal a record £439m of equity investment in 2025 despite fewer funding rounds as investors concentrated capital into larger, more established businesses. Moreover, venture and growth-stage companies captured almost 79% of total investment, highlighting increasing demand for technologies with proven deployment potential and clear paths to scale.

Perhaps the most significant finding is that commercialisation is becoming the defining challenge for founders. As company formations decline and competition for investment intensifies, access to capital alone is no longer enough. The businesses most likely to succeed are those that can demonstrate real-world deployment, customer adoption and measurable operational value.

At Murphy Capital, this belief sits at the heart of our investment strategy. Backed by Murphy’s 75 years of infrastructure delivery experience, we provide founders with more than capital: access to live projects, operational expertise and routes into market. We believe the next generation of Infratech leaders will be defined not simply by the solutions they build, but by their ability to scale them in real-world environments.
